Patient Journey

Understanding what happens at each stage of your care removes the uncertainty. Here’s your roadmap to recovery.

Your Journey at Access Orthopaedics

Your orthopaedic journey follows a clear pathway: referral, assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing support. From your first appointment to full recovery, each stage is designed to give you the information and care you need to move forward with confidence

What to Expect at Each Stage

Step One

Getting Started

Once your referral is received from your physician, physiotherapist, or chiropractor, our clinical team reviews it and triages it based on clinical need. Our administrative team will then be in touch to schedule your appointment and answer any questions you have. Registration paperwork will be sent to you by email ahead of your visit. While you wait for your appointment, we provide educational resources to help you understand your condition and prepare.

Step Two

Your First Appointment

Your initial assessment is through a one-on-one. A member of our multidisciplinary team will review your medical history, discuss your symptoms and goals, and conduct a physical examination. Depending on your condition, on-site diagnostic imaging may be arranged at the same visit. Most assessments are covered with a valid Alberta Health Care Card.

To help your appointment run smoothly, please bring the following:
• Your Alberta Health Care Card
• Any relevant medical records or imaging you already have
• A written note of your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, and any previous treatments you've tried
• Comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being assessed

Step Three

Your Care Plan

Following your assessment, your care team will discuss their findings with you and develop a personalized treatment plan. This plan will outline your diagnosis or clinical impression, your treatment options, and a realistic timeline for next steps. You will leave your first appointment with clear answers and a clear direction.

Step Four

Ongoing Care and Progress

Your care team will monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed to support your recovery. We encourage patients to be active participants in their care, asking questions, following through on home exercise programs, and staying engaged with their rehabilitation. Our goal is that every patient has the knowledge and support they need to move well and live well.
